Your People Can Only Grow As Much As You Do
Many leaders are always frustrated by the lack of growth of their people. They are asking them to change and grow. However, in most of these circumstances the people they are looking at are a mirror image of their leader, which happens to be you.
If you have more than one person on your team that is not growing the way you want them to, producing the way you want to, or even worse you are regularly turning people over, chances are it is you who needs help.
If you are asking your people to grow and develop you need to first start with you. If you do not have a coach, are not going to training, and/or regularly applying new concepts from books you are reading, then you are likely holding the development and growth of your company and its people back.
Here are some of the common things I see executives that I have worked with do that are preventing their people from growing:
- They are poor recruiters – Do they hire “A” players or do you settle for “B” players? Do you hire the “B” players because you believe that is all you think you will get or are you not patient enough to wait for the “A” players to come along?
- Do not have good self awareness or have low self esteem?
- Try to micromanage “A” players so they end up not wanting to work with you?
- They take credit for their ideas, talk behind people’s backs, and can’t keep a secret. These flaws cause “A” players to act like “B” players?
- Create a culture of distrust which causes productivity to be diminished?
- Overestimate their decision-making abilities and underestimating that of others?
- They are micro-managers and need to stay informed on too many things and thus inadvertently cause your people to be supervisors instead of leaders? This habit also becomes a bottleneck slowing everything down.
Next time you are frustrated by the lack of performance of your people ask yourself this question “What have I done lately to grow and develop as a leader?” If you cannot come up with a long list of things you have done lately, I would start by fixing you before fixing them. Do you have a coach, have you gone to training, have you read a book, and how have you improved recently? If you haven’t then they won’t.
